Eighteen years ago today, on October 10, 2007, $SPY made an intra-day high that would not be seen again until 2014.
Quantitative trading offers diversification to traditional assets by actively trading the markets so that opportunities can be captured in different types of market environments.
On Wednesday we had one of our best days in a while taking long trades. Today was a nice day to take short trades. The markets have been compressed lately. It is nice to see some intra-day trading range this week. Regardless of direction, the stock indexes have seemed to be overly evasive to any real or natural movement intra-day the last several months and have traded much differently than what we have seen in the 2020's.
This week was a refreshing return to the day trade market environment.
The news today seemed to indicate that China was going to take action in the trade war that would be difficult to account for and find a solution to.
Yesterday, the market looked as if stock indexes would continue to rise and precious metals would be the one to "take a break" and have a pullback.
One day makes a big difference. Stock indexes had one of their biggest dips in a long time while the precious metals continued back into an uptrend.
Today's sell off was different based on the fact that the stock indexes sold off into the close. We have seen a pattern for a long time, where on day days, the stock index early sell offs have the tendency to pause selling in the afternoon and remain "propped up" and choppy into the close. Today's price action included strong selling early as well as into the close.
There were many nice short trades in the quantitative trading system portfolios.
One day does not make a trend and we maintain the long-short approach for our portfolio trading and are flat over the weekend.
