If you saw the movie "The Big Short", Michael Burry did not start making money on his short position until he realized Wall Street was now on the right side of the trade or at least hedged (this was based on the movie and may not be the real-world case). To get a second chance to establish the "perceived correct position" at all-time highs could generate some interesting price action in the second half of 2025.
Sometimes, the markets retrace an entire legitimate move so that the "smart money" can correctly position itself. The strong sell off to the April lows followed by a quick recover and a gap up 5 days in a row in the Nasdaq 100 to end the month and quarter has placed the indexes back at all-time highs. The entire scenario "feels" like there is a force that can "fix it" the way "they" want it. Overall, it has generated some interesting price action in the first half of 2025.
We discussed this scenario coming into the last week of trade, how the markets like to "time" all time highs at the end of the month and quarter in our 12 for 12 post.
Could it be that simple? Make new highs at the end of June and then re-start the sell-off in July. We know the markets moved higher in 2024 with all the net gains at night, similar to 2007. The liquidity seems to be able to move the market where it wants to. We focus on long-short day trades in the futures markets. Volatility has been extremely low in the past week and much lower than the VIX indicates. Lately every sell off looks like a trap to make you exit long trades and get short. It won't always be that way. The tone of the markets can change on the month and quarter.
The hypothetical results for the Portfolios are listed below for the month of June:
Stock Index Portfolio 18 (Emini) = +$10,635*
Two System Portfolio = +$15,090.00*
Four System Portfolio = +$13,115.00*
*Keep in mind the exit strategy for V-Reversal was changed mid-month, creating a small mismatch between the hypotheticals and live. The net result for both types of exit strategies used on V-Reversal was still very similar and favorable.
