Last night we saw nighttime operations in the stock index futures market drive the market higher. Nighttime operations since January 2024 have kept the Nasdaq 100 in positive territory in spite of the downward pressure and net losses during the most liquid day session between 9:30 am and 4:00 pm EST.
We have noted several times how the net gains for the Nasdaq 100 during the day session were down in 2024. The day session down trend has accelerated in 2025 while bringing the composite gains lower as well. A market that is able to post net gains solely based on price action during less liquid time periods is vulnerable in the long term.
Bullish nighttime patterns have been observed for many years but the divergence between the day session and the night session is unusual and something to pay attention to.
If our focus is daytrading, and it is, we have to recognize that when the market gaps up and rallies the first 30 minutes, posting 300 point gains by 10 am EST, there might not be much of the trend left to trade.
