Regime Analysis and Portfolios for December and into 2025

We look at the different market regimes as we setup our portfolios for December and into 2025. During President Donald Trump's first term, in 2017, the VIX hit its lowest level and moved into the 8 handle. What strategies worked in 2017 during record low volatility? The VIX is dropping to its lowest levels of since July today.

In 2022, the stock market went through a bear cycle pullback as the Fed raised interest rates with rising inflation. What strategies worked in the 2022 bear market? Is it possible that 2025 will have higher inflation and another bear market cycle? We do take note that if the year ended in November, it would be the only year in the history of the Nasdaq other than in 2007, before the Great Financial Crisis where the Nasdaq was up more than 10% while the day session gains were negative. (picture Christian Bale, playing Michael Burry in the move The Big Short and screaming with frustration at the difference between delusion and reality while the rest of the world acted as if everything was normal)

In 2023 - 2024, we entered a bull market cycle. 2024 was unique with the day session trend being consistently different than the night session trend. The last time this happened was in 2018 when the market was down on the year as the Fed tried to normalize interest rates.

Since no one can predict the future with certainty, we like to have a list of strategies that are working now and in the past, based on different market regimes. We are prepared to trade bull markets, bear markets, sideways markets, as well as record low VIX markets.

We discuss the list of portfolios:
